Schedule Winterization Call Your Nearest LocationDon't Wait for the First Freeze
Every year we get the same call in mid-December. Somebody skipped winterization, a hard freeze came through, and now there's water where it shouldn't be.
Water expands when it freezes. If it's sitting in your engine block, manifolds, or cooling system when temperatures drop below freezing for long enough, that expansion can crack cast iron. A cracked block is frequently a four- or five-figure repair — and because it's considered preventable, it's generally not covered under warranty.
Winterization is the cheapest insurance in boat ownership. Our certified technicians handle it at all seven Nichols Marine locations across Oklahoma and Texas.
When Should You Schedule?
The trigger is temperature, not the calendar. Winterize before the first hard freeze, not after — once you've had one, you may already have a problem you won't discover until spring.
Northeast & Central Oklahoma
Tulsa, Grand Lake, Skiatook, Keystone, Norman, OKC
Target early to mid-October
Southeast Oklahoma
McAlester, Lake Eufaula, Sardis Lake
Target late October
East Texas
Longview, Lake O' the Pines, Cedar Creek
Typically November
DFW Metroplex
Lewisville, Grapevine, Ray Roberts, Texoma
Typically November
A simpler heuristic: when you stop planning to use the boat for the season, winterize it. Don't wait for cold weather to force the decision.
What Our Winterization Service Includes
Cooling System Drain & Antifreeze
The step that matters most, and the one most commonly done incompletely. Every engine has its own drain points and its own procedure. Missing a single one can crack a block. Our techs know where all of them are on your specific engine.
Engine Fogging
Fogging the cylinders protects internal components against corrosion over months of sitting. Done in the right order with the right products.
Lower Unit Service
Draining and refilling the gear oil is also a diagnostic step. Milky oil means water is getting past the seals — a problem worth catching in October rather than April.
Oil & Filter Change
Used oil holds acids and combustion byproducts. Leaving it in over the winter lets those sit against internal components for months. Fall is the right time to change it.
Fuel System Treatment
Stabilizer run through the entire fuel system, not just the tank. Untreated ethanol fuel sitting for months is a leading cause of spring no-start calls.
Full Inspection
Winterization puts a technician's hands on your boat. Worn impellers, weeping seals, corroded connections, and failing batteries get caught in the fall — when there's time to fix them.
Outboards vs. Sterndrives & Inboards
Both need winterizing, but the exposure isn't identical — and this is where a lot of owners get caught out.
Outboards
Modern outboards largely self-drain when trimmed down, which gives them some natural protection. That doesn't make them exempt — fuel stabilization, fogging, lower unit service, and battery care all still matter, and the lower unit can hold water.
Sterndrives & Inboards
Significantly more risk. These hold water in the block, manifolds, and cooling passages, and those systems need to be properly drained and filled with antifreeze. If you run a sterndrive or inboard in Oklahoma, this is not a step to skip or improvise.
We Winterize All Makes — Not Just What We Sell
You don't have to have bought your boat from Nichols Marine. Our bays are open to any boat owner.
Our technicians hold factory certifications from Mercury Outboard, MerCruiser, Yamaha, Ilmor, and Volvo Penta — and those engines power most of the boats on the water. If it runs one of them, we can winterize it.
Why Scheduling Early Beats Waiting
Shop Capacity
Every service department in the region gets slammed in the same three-week window, because everyone waits for the same cold snap. Schedule in early October and you get prompt turnaround.
You Buy a Buffer
Weather doesn't negotiate. An unseasonably early freeze in late October has happened plenty of times in Oklahoma. Getting it done early means you're never watching a forecast and hoping.
Problems Get Found
Issues caught in the fall get addressed while there's time. The same issue found in April means missing the first warm weekend of the season.

Winterization FAQ
How much does winterization cost?
It depends on your engine type and configuration — a single outboard and a twin-engine inboard are very different jobs. Call your nearest location and we'll quote your specific boat.
Do you winterize boats I didn't buy from Nichols Marine?
Yes. Our service departments are open to all boat owners regardless of where the boat was purchased.
How long does it take?
Turnaround depends on how busy the shop is when you bring it in. Schedule in early October and it's quick. Wait until after the first freeze warning and you're in line behind everyone else who also waited.
Can I winterize my boat myself?
Parts of it, yes. Cleaning, fuel stabilizer, battery removal, and covering are all reasonable DIY tasks. The cooling system drain, antifreeze, fogging, and lower unit service are where getting it wrong is expensive. Our winterization checklist breaks down exactly which is which.
Does skipping winterization void my warranty?
Freeze damage is generally considered preventable and is often excluded from warranty coverage. Manufacturers expect owners to winterize. Having it done and documented by a certified dealer protects you if a question ever comes up.
Do you offer boat storage?
We don't offer storage, but we're happy to talk through your options. Our guide to indoor vs. outdoor boat storage in Oklahoma covers what each approach protects against — hail in particular is worth thinking about here.
What about spring commissioning?
We handle that too — de-winterizing, battery service, engine inspection, and a full systems check before your first launch. Many customers book both at the same time in the fall. See our full service and parts page for everything we offer.
